Joseph Lee “Joe” Kister, 81, of Crystal City died Sept. 6, 2019, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mr. Kister was a retired lead worker for St. Joseph Lead Co. in Herculaneum and a member of Sacred Heart Church in Crystal City. He also worked at Festus Manor Nursing Home and as a bus driver for many school districts. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and a member of VFW Post 3777 in Crystal City, American Legion Post 253 in Festus and Knights of Columbus Council 1230 in Crystal City, where he was a fourth-degree Knight. Born Jan. 7, 1938, in Crystal City, he was the son of the late Ida G. (Todd) and Dr. Julius Kister. He was preceded in death by his wife: Barbara Jean (Bulger) Kister.
He is survived by a son: Jerry (Amy Boone) Kister of Imperial; four sisters: Betty (John) Van Druff of Seattle, Wash., Margaret Londal of Fenton, Judy Jacoby of Seattle, Wash. and Rita (Jim) Krieg of Rich Fountain; two grandsons: Blake and Sam Kister; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister: Mary Bain.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Sacred Heart Church, 555 Bailey Road, in Crystal City, officiated by Father Mathew Cheruparambil.
