Helen L. Fears, 93, of Greenville died May 14, 2019, in Fenton. Mrs. Fears was a gentle, quiet, smart Christian woman. She was the matriarch of the family and loved spending time with family members. She also enjoyed reading. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hillsboro for 16 years and loved taking classes there. She was involved in the church’s bereavement program and was a Vacation Bible School teacher.
Born July 29, 1925, in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Murphy and Martha (Rhoden) Allen. She was preceded in death by her husband: Thomas Fears.
She is survived by three children: Thomas Fears of O’Fallon, James Fears of Hillsboro and Linda (Rick) Webb of Cedar Hill; one son-in-law: Larry Hovis of O’Fallon; 16 grandchildren: Jeff Fears, Steve Fears, Chris Fears, Tim Fears, David Fears, Jason Fears, Cindy Fears, Rachael Fears, Kathi Fears, Mark Webb, Rick Webb, Kellie Esker, David Mangelsdorf, Jeff Humphey, Larry Hovis and Becky Zimmerman; 25 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by one daughter: Carolyn Hovis; one daughter-in-law: Rickie Fears; three siblings: Vernon Allen, Herbert Allen and Paul Allen; and one sister-in-law: Irene Allen.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the funeral services at 2 p.m. Monday, May 20, at Chapel Hill Mortuary, 6300 Hwy. 30, in Cedar Hill. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Hillsboro. Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel Hill Mortuary.
