Betty L. Martin, 95, of De Soto died Dec. 17, 2019, at Hillcrest Care Center in De Soto. Mrs. Martin was a 1946 graduate of the University of Missouri in Columbia with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics, and over the next few years, she held cooking classes to promote the use of gas appliances. From 1950-1958 she was a home economics and biology teacher with the Hillsboro R-3 School District. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Hillsboro and volunteered with the American Cancer Society and NextStep for Life. She served on the Hillsboro R-3 school board and was a member of the Hillsboro Garden Club, the Modern Seekers Club, the Missouri Snowbirds and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, cross-stitching, and watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball, especially Yadier Molina. Born Oct. 27, 1924, in Moberly, she was the daughter of the late Loyd and Edna (Ratliff) Crose. She was preceded in death by her husband: Samuel E. Martin.
She is survived by three children: Donna (Jay) Soto of Fayetteville, N.C., Curt Martin of Ironton and Lois (Mark) Menius of Kansas City; three grandchildren: Amber Rodriguez of Fayetteville, N.C., Stephen (Nicole Tennyson) Menius of St. Louis and Rebecca Menius of Kansas City; a great-grandchild: Luciana Rodriguez of Fayetteville, N.C.; and numerous other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by three siblings: Dorothy (Charles) Fleming, Roy (Hazel) Crose and Frank Crose; and a sister-in-law: Pearl Crose.
A memorial gathering will take place from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, at First Baptist Church in Hillsboro, followed by a memorial service, officiated by the Rev. Jimmie Turner. Arrangements are under the direction of Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home in De Soto.
