Bertha (Cooley) Evans, 89, of Festus died Aug. 20, 2019, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. After her junior year of high school, Mrs. Evans moved to Ellington, where she met her eventual husband, Bernell. They were married on July 5, 1946, then moved to St. Louis and had a son in September 1947. She was employed at Brown Shoe and Coin Acceptors, among other locations in the St. Louis area. After retiring and moving to Eminence, she earned an EMT license and worked for the Ozark Ambulance District for many years. She moved to the Festus area in 2009. Born Nov. 23, 1929, she was the eldest daughter of the late ElDora Isabelle (Osburn) and Joseph Hercules Cooley. She was preceded in death by her husband: Bernell Leon Evans.
She is survived by a son: Wayne (Sharon) Evans of Hillsboro; three grandchildren: Dawn Evans of Festus, Joyce (Steve) Francis of Imperial and Adam Evans of Alton, Ill.; three great-grandchildren: Ben Pilger, Amanda Pilger and Hayley Larson; a great-great-granddaughter: Hayley Pilger; a sister-in-law: Aileen Tipton of St. Louis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by six siblings: Otto (Janice) Cooley, Utah (Lillian) Cooley, Albert (Marge) Cooley, Juanita (Melvin) White, Dean (Wayne) Conway and Nelly (Virgil) Ipock.
A funeral service was held Aug. 24 at Yarber Mortuary in Eminence, officiated by the Rev. Lari Grubbs. Burial was in the New Eminence Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Yarber Mortuary.
