Bernice Whitehead, 94, of Festus died Aug. 5, 2019. Mrs. Whitehead was a resident of Festus for 54 years and was employed with Bussmann Fuse in St. Louis until retiring in December 1983. She was a charter member of the Bethel Free Will Baptist Church in Festus, founded in 1974, where she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, taught various Sunday school classes and served as a secretary among other jobs through the years. She enjoyed church services, spending time with family and friends, reading, crafts and cooking. Born June 6, 1925, in Bernie, she was the daughter of the late Gertie Agnes (Gann) and Cecil Clyde Cook. She was preceded in death by her husband: Joseph Homer Whitehead, whom she married Feb. 8, 1945, in Clay County, Ark.
She is survived by three children: Joe Whitehead, Tommy Whitehead and Terri (Bill) Jones, all of Festus; two grandchildren: Brooke Moonier of Godfrey, Ill., and Jason Whitehead of Hammond, Ind.; three step-grandchildren: Matt (Christy) Jones of Powder Springs, Ga., Timothy Jones of Dallas, Texas, and Melissa (Mike) Johnson of Webster Groves; four great-grandchildren: Henry, Lily, Caroline and Benjamin; three sisters: Barbara (Delbert) Maddox of Malden, Judy Walker of Bernie and Della (Marlon) Crossland of Festus; a brother: Clifford (Eva) Cook of Dexter; and numerous other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by two brothers: Bill Cook and Carlyn Cook; three sisters, Neita (the late Floyd) Pullum, Alberta (the late Lloyd) Pullum and Carolyn (the late J.C.) Link; her mother-in-law: Zetta Whitehead of Pevely; and many other in-laws.
Visitation is scheduled from 9-10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Bethel Free Will Baptist Church, 1233 American Legion Dr., in Festus, followed by a celebration of life officiated by the Rev. Mike Hoggard. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Bernie Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus.
