The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate a shooting that occurred Thursday afternoon (Oct. 15) at an apartment in the 13000 block of Hwy. CC south of Festus, spokesman Grant Bissell said today (Oct. 16).
The shooting victim, a 42-year-old High Ridge man who was shot in the leg and transported to an area hospital for treatment, is expected to survive, Bissell said.
The suspect, a 30-year-old De Soto man, turned himself into authorities about 30 minutes after the incident was reported, Bissell said.
Deputies were called to the apartment at about 12:20 p.m. Thursday, and the suspected shooter turned himself into deputies at about 12:55 p.m. at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office’s headquarters at 400 First St. in Hillsboro, Bissell said.
He said the suspect has been released from custody while the Sheriff’s Office investigates the case before applying for charges against him through the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
The suspected shooter had gone to the Festus-area apartment where his sister, a 34-year-old De Soto woman, and the victim were staying, Bissell said
The suspect was carrying a shotgun when he showed up at the apartment, and it appears he got into an argument with the victim over a financial matter. The woman told authorities she ran from the apartment during the argument and then heard a shot being fired, Bissell said.
