Curtis Jermaine Phillips, 38, was charged with two felonies after he allegedly argued with his girlfriend and set their Crystal City home on fire. The incident happened about 1:10 a.m. June 30 in the 100 block of Broadway Avenue, Crystal City Police reported.
Phillips was being held Tuesday in the Jefferson County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
Phillips’ girlfriend, a 46-year-old woman who also lived in the Crystal City home, called police, and when officers arrived, they could see smoke coming out of the second story of the home and could hear the victim yelling for help, the report said.
Phillips allegedly refused to open the door and police kicked the door open, according to the release.
The woman had locked herself inside a bedroom, and officers found one fire in front of the bedroom door, as well as another fire in the kitchen. Officers were able to stomp out the fire near the bedroom, and they used water from the sink in the kitchen to put out the other one, the report said.
The woman told police she had locked herself in a bedroom after arguing with Phillips. She also said Phillips started the fire outside the bedroom so she could not get out, and he allegedly set the fire in the kitchen in an effort to burn down the house, according to the report.
No one was hurt in the incident, the report said.
The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Phillips with one count of first-degree arson and one count of first-degree domestic abuse, both class B felonies punishable by five to 15 years in prison.
