A 24-year-old St. Louis man was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated - assault second degree following a one-vehicle accident on New Year’s Day on I-55 north of Hwy. M between Barnhart and Imperial. Both the driver and a passenger were seriously hurt in the wreck, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.
At 10:40 p.m. Jan. 1, the man was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer north on the interstate, and the SUV ran off the left side of the road and struck a concrete median barrier, the report said.
He and a passenger in the SUV – Chloe E. Hayes, 23, of St. Louis – were taken by Rock Township Ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in south St. Louis County, according to the report.
The man was listed in good condition this afternoon (Jan. 3), a hospital spokesman said.
However, he said the hospital had no information about Hayes.
Neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a seat belt, the patrol reported.
The SUV was totaled, the report said.
The patrol arrested the driver early the next morning at the hospital, the report said.
