A De Soto man riding a motorcycle on Christmas afternoon (Dec. 25) on northbound I-55 near Pevely was killed when he was struck from behind by an SUV.
Leon J. Barnett, 48, was pronounced dead by emergency personnel at 2:43 p.m.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that at about 2:15 p.m. Barnett was riding a 1995 Yamaha motorcycle northbound on I-55 in the far right lane “at a low rate of speed” when James D. Mattingly, 49, Herculaneum, also driving northbound on I-55 in a 2013 Honda CRV, changed lanes from the middle lane to the far right lane. The front of the CRV struck the rear of the motorcycle, causing Barnett to be ejected from it.
Mattingly sustained minor injuries and was taken for treatment by Joachim-Plattin Ambulance to Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City.
Both vehicles were totaled and both drivers were wearing safety devices, the report says.
