mail truck

An Arnold Post Office worker was seriously hurt Thursday afternoon (Dec. 29), when he was stopped in a mail truck on Old Lemay Ferry Road north of Vogel Road and a pickup struck the back of it, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reports.

At 3:25 p.m., the postal worker, Donald J. Santoyo, 62, of Arnold, was headed north on Old Lemay Ferry Road and stopped the truck he was driving to place mail in a mailbox. That's when Nicholas A. Chisholm, 17, of Barnhart, driving a northbound pickup, didn’t notice the stopped mail truck, and the front of the pickup struck the rear of it, the report said.

The mail truck was pushed forward into two mailboxes and then ran off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole, according to the report.

No injuries were reported for the teenager.

Santoyo, however, was taken by Rock Township Ambulance to St. Anthony’s Medical Center in south St. Louis County.

By Friday (Dec. 30), Santoyo had been released from the hospital and was home recuperating, Arnold Post Office supervisor Laura Riley said.

“He’s OK,” she said.

The two drivers were wearing seat belts, the patrol reported.

Both vehicles were totaled, the report said.
