A home under construction in Imperial was destroyed by fire this morning (Feb. 1), said Chief Bob Dunn of the Saline Valley Fire Protection District.

Saline Valley Fire got a call at 6:49 a.m. about the fire at the home in the 5000 block of Grandview Drive off East Rock Creek Road after numerous people saw a large column of smoke in the area. When firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed by flames. It took until 8 a.m. for 19 firefighters from five trucks to control the blaze, Dunn said.

He said no construction crews were working at the home at the time. The home was nearly completed with a move-in date scheduled in March.

"It was cold this morning, but fortunately, the temperature wasn’t as low as it had been over the past two days, Dunn said.

“Any time you are dealing with extreme weather it makes it more difficult,” he said. “We didn’t have any problems with the hoses freezing, or anything like that. Other than keeping the guys warm, there were no other challenges.”

No firefighters were injured during the call, Dunn said.

He said the home sustained so much damage that a cause could not be determined, but the state Fire Marshal’s Office ruled the fire accidental.

“There wasn’t any evidence of any kind of crime,” Dunn said.

Rock Community Fire Protection District assisted with the call.
