Donald Christopher Sorrels, 32, of Imperial died sometime overnight from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head, following a standoff on Monday (Feb. 10) with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, says Capt. Ron Arnhart.

At about 8:40 p.m. Monday, deputies went to Sorrels’ home in the 2100 block of Devonshire Drive in Imperial with a search warrant in connection with a burglary and stolen property investigation, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

After deputies arrived, Sorrels, who was armed, barricaded himself inside the home and deputies attempted to negotiate with him, the report said.

At about 10 p.m., deputies heard a single gunshot from inside the home and after entering, they found Sorrels in the basement with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was taken to an area hospital for treatment and died there, Arnhart said.

Sorrels was the only one at the home during the standoff.

He was a suspect in a burglary that occurred Jan. 13 at a business in the 900 block of Jeffco Executive Drive in Imperial, Arnhart said.

Sorrels had previous convictions for driving while intoxicated, possession of a controlled substance, assault, resisting arrest and property damage, court records show.
