fatal accident patrol patch

Sharon J. Huff, 58, of Mineral Point died Wednesday (Aug. 31) after a 3:56 p.m. head-on collision on southbound Hwy. 21 at Amvets Drive in De Soto, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reports.

Huff was a passenger in a 1990 Chevrolet Caprice Classic, driven southbound by Linda J. DeClue, 56, of Potosi, who was seriously injured in the accident, the patrol reported.

Dawn C. Hoekstra, 55, De Soto, driver of a 2001 Hyundai Elantra that was northbound on Hwy. 21, also was seriously injured, the report said.

The patrol said the accident occurred when DeClue swerved to the left to avoid a crash after an unknown vehicle, also southbound on Hwy. 21, slowed suddenly and tried to make a left turn onto Amvets directly in front of DeClue.

DeClue’s car struck Hoekstra’s northbound car head-on, the patrol said.

Huff was taken by Valle Ambulance District to Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City, where she was pronounced dead at 4:41 p.m., the report said.

DeClue and Hoekstra were taken by helicopter to Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, the patrol reported, but a hospital spokesman said today (Sept. 1) that neither woman was listed in the hospital’s directory.

All three women were wearing seat belts and both cars were totaled, the patrol said.
