Firefighters were called to put out a barn fire overnight in the De Soto area.
Lt. Andy Coleman of the De Soto Rural Fire Protection District said the district received a call at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday (March 22) concerning a barn on fire in the 13800 block of Vineland Road south of Hwy. 21 and south of De Soto.
“The barn was fully involved when we arrived,” he said. “It was full of hay bales, farm equipment and livestock. When we got there, the roof had already collapsed.”
Coleman said firefighters from six departments responded to the scene and were able to put out the fire soon afterward; the last truck left the farm at about 2:30 a.m., he said.
The fire was contained to the barn, he said.
The only casualty of the fire was a calf that was trapped inside the barn, he said.
“We helped bury one calf,” he said. “We’ve done that before. I’ve buried dogs and cats. I guess it’s kind of a public relations thing we do, to help people.”
No firefighters were hurt during the call, he said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Coleman said.
