A 45-year-old Festus man has been arrested for suspicion of drunk driving, following a head-on collision in Pevely that injured six members of a Pevely family, Pevely Police Chief Ron Weeks says.
The accident happened at 7:51 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 2) on Abbey Lane just east of Christina Drive in Pevely.
The family lives in the Tiara at the Abbey subdivision, Weeks said.
Vernon Gerdel, 42, was driving a 1992 Oldsmobile 88 east on Abbey Lane and a westbound 1999 Dodge Durango driven by the Festus man allegedly crossed the center line and struck Gerdel’s car, which had five of his family members inside, Weeks said.
The passengers were Amy Gerdel, 42; Kasey Kroeck, 13; Maelina Gerdel, 12; Madillin Gerdel, 11; and Kyle Kroeck, Weeks said.
Police don’t have an age for Kyle Kroeck, he said.
Vernon and Amy Gerdel had to be removed from the car by rescue crews, Weeks said, adding that Vernon was complaining of injuries to his right knee, and Amy had head injuries and problems breathing, Weeks said.
Kasey had neck and stomach abrasions and a chipped tooth, and Maelina had wrist abrasions and right side pain, he said.
Madillin had head and face injuries and back pain, and Kyle had nose and mouth injuries, Weeks said.
All six were transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City, he said.
The Festus man refused medical treatment on the scene and was arrested for suspicion of DWI, Weeks said.
Vernon and Maelina Gerdel and Kasey Kroeck were wearing seat belts, but police don’t know whether the rest of the family members were wearing them, Weeks said.
The Festus man was wearing a seat belt, Weeks added.
